What if I don't have a digital camera?

We can print from your negatives, or from your prints.

Please note that these will have to be posted to us and that we recommend Special Delivery. We will return the items in the same way but cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage caused by Royal Mail.

What image types can I use?

We can accept .jpg, .tiff and .png

TIFF would be the preferred option, however these files do tend to be larger than jpg flies. If sending TIFF files it would be better to send them via CD or DVD because of the size of files.

Jpg files are ' lossy' which means that some data is lost when the file is compressed.

For e-mail of file upload jpg would be the better option. How large can my image file be?

If you have any problems uploading an image please email it to info@bigphotoshop.co.uk with requirements of what you need and one of our sales staff will contact you.

How do I send an image?

You can use our easy 3-step image upload service, however if your image is not in digital format we do accept photos by post, we must stress that all photo's sent by post should be recorded delivery as we cannot be held responsible for lost or undelivered images, please also provide a contact number so our sales team can contact you for payment details. Or you can just simply email it to info@bigphotoshop.co.uk

What resolution do you print at?

This depends on the size of the printed image, the larger the completed image, the greater the viewing distance. A recognised standard for determining the viewing distance is 1.5 x diagonal of printed image. The further away from the image you view it the lower the required resolution, this is because the further from the image you are, the more difficult it is for your eyes to perceive the changes in the resolution. A major factor in your ability to distinguish the difference in detail of the image is the lighting conditions, the brighter the lights, the higher resolution that is required.

When we have an image that we believe to be too low in resolution we may be able to improve this by using interpolation software, if this is not possible we would communicate this to you ASAP. We would not print an image which we believed to be unsuitable for your requirements.

Please see our guide to image resolution.

What resolution must my image have?

Naturally, the higher the resolution, the better the image quality. However, file size also increases at higher resolution.

Please remember, however, that the quality of a print is determined by the resolution.

Please ensure your camera is set to the highest possible setting for image resolution, this will give the best possible completed print. Do bear in mind, when you set your camera for maximum resolution, the amount of images your camera can store will be reduced. A final note, when saving your file from the camera, if you are offered a chance to compress the file, please enter no, if you select yes, what will happen is the software will dispose of some of the image data.

What Is A Giclée Print?

Giclée, commonly pronounced "zhee-clay," is an invented term for the process of making fine art prints from a digital source using ink-jet printing. The word "Giclée", from the French language word "gicleur" meaning "nozzle", was created by Jack Duganne, a printmaker working in the field, to represent any inkjet based digital print used as fine art. The intent of that name was to distinguish commonly known industrial "Iris proofs" from the type of fine art prints artists were producing on those same types of printers. The term, originally applied to fine art prints created on Iris printers in a process invented in the early 1990s but has since come to mean any high quality ink-jet print.
